Google to Charge for Rentals

We've seen this coming, and now YouTube has finally announced that it will soon be offering video rentals in their website. This new plan for YouTube is yet to be finalized, but you got the hint that soon enough, you have to pay to watch the video of your favorite YouTube uploader.

No details of when this rental services will be offered or who can participate or how you can participate. The only clear thing is that YouTube has only allowed seasoned uploaders as of the moment to participate in the rentals. These are the users who are already sharing revenue with YouTube through ads.

So are we gonna be seeing "Pay $1 to see my dog do a trick"? or "$2 to see me sing and dance"? Not likely. As stated, seasoned users, professional and verified users will only be allowed to offer their videos for rentals.

Bad news for people who are not subscribers of HBO or Animal Planet or of Discovery Channel. These people usually browse YouTube for episodes and clips from the cable programs, but surely these YouTube users will also put their video for rentals. So it's like you're paying HBO clips not through cable subscriptions but for watching them in YouTube.

YouTube must also take pirates into consideration. Once popular tutorials or indie movies or car reviews are offered for rentals, YouTube must prevent these videos from being downloaded to prevent it from being distributed for free. We all know that there are quite a number of YouTube downloading tools out there, and so it's interesting to see how YouTube is going to act on this.
