When Reading Too Much Becomes A Problem

Being a freelance writer and at the same time, working as a software developer in the corporate world, has its downsides, which is just like the case of any person who wanted to balance freelance work with a corporate job.

As a worker in the corporate world, 45 hours of your week is already assumed to be lost on your job. That only leaves you adequate time for other things. When you are a freelancer, even your weekends are taken off you because you have to look at making sure that you deliver enough articles to give you a decent living. Financially speaking, this is an ideal scenario, but this requires top notch time management skills that I am afraid I still do not have at the moment.

The thing with working as a freelance writer is that you are required to read a lot in order to come up with a piece of article. You don't make an article a collage of ideas gathered from different sources. Rather, you build up on ideas that you read and craft new ideas on top of them. Ideally, this should be the case. But for a person like me who is click-happy, reading articles online could go for hours and hours without me writing a single word. I read an article, then I see a related link. I then click it just to see another article, with more links. The cycle goes on and on until I realize that I have to write something. By then, I have to sleep because of my corporate job the next day.

It's a crazy cycle, but it does have its perks. Though I'm not a book reader as much I was in the past, I still think that I get to learn a lot while reading through articles upon articles. It's not nice when you see that you are being unproductive, but I guess that is the price that I have to pay. Now if only I could manage my time better, then this wouldn't be a problem.
