Motorola Sues Apple

Not a week after it was sued by Microsoft over its Android phones, Motorola is now putting up a fight with Apple, apparently for the same case of infringing patents. This is no news, as a lot of big companies nowadays are doing this. Filing a patent infringement case has already become a trend in the tech sector.

Motorola's case against Apple apparently involves most of the company's products, from the new ones to the not so new. The ground of the case is focused on "wireless communication technologies, such as WCDMA (3G), GPRS, 802.11 and antenna design, and key smartphone technologies including wireless email, proximity sensing, software application management, location-based services and multi-device synchronization."

"After Apple's late entry into the telecommunications market, we engaged in lengthy negotiations," Motorola Mobile's vice president of intellectual property Kirk Dailey said . "But Apple has refused to take a license. We had no choice but to file these complaints to halt Apple's continued infringement," he added.

Apple is fighting Nokia's cases against it, HTC is picking on Apple and Oracle also had a falling out with Google which phone, the Nexus One, is said to have copied some of its features from Apple. And with Motorola's case against Apple, and Microsoft against Motorola, cases filed in a week, it only means that these companies are planning to use their patent advantage to bring their competition down at all cost.

But more than that, it clearly shows a flaw in the patent system. And if this is not addressed, the cycle will go on, and on.
